Piping and Producing Power .... Over 10 billion gallons of water saved per year!
Swalley's canal piping projects have permanently restored over 45 cfs to the middle Deschutes River and enhanced delivery of over 20 cfs in conserved water to farms. That's around 10 billion gallons of water per year managed more efficiently! To date, we have contracted some of the largest conserved water transfer projects in the state of Oregon. Our conservation projects have greatly improved streamflow and water quality for local fisheries and other aquatic habitat on the Deschutes River whilst making water deliveries for our farmers and other water users more secure. An accompanying hydroelectric plant that we built in 2010 (shown below) powers ~250 households and businesses in the Old-Mill District and Southern Crossing District of Bend, Or with low-impact, fish-friendly, green, renewable energy. The Deschutes River Conservancy, Energy Trust of Oregon, Farmers Conservation Alliance, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, DEQ, and many others have been key partners in many of our capital improvement projects.
Swalley hydropower operations are incidental to on-farm"water deliveries, so green, renewable electricity is created when we are delivering water to our farmers. When farms don't need water, renewable energy operations are ramped down. In Swalley, No Farms Means No Food AND No Renewable Energy. By owning and operating a small hydropower plant, the District's operations are effectively considered carbon negative.
